Today we’re about to have two titans face off in a scooter race! Well, at least on paper we are. We’ll be looking at two popular modern electric scooters, one from Xiaomi and one from Segway.

 

While Segway is already an established brand name when it comes to scooters, we shouldn’t underestimate Xiaomi by any means. They have only been producing electric scooters since 2016, but their products have managed to carve a name for themselves with their quality.

 

So, the race today will be between Xiaomi’s Scooter 4 Ultra and Segway’s Ninebot Max G2. Coincidentally, both of them released pretty close to each other, with both of them hitting the streets on May 2023!

 

Now, we’ll be comparing the specs of each scooter against the other to let you know which one is more worthy of your time!

If you’re planning to ride your new scooter in particularly rough or uneven terrain, suspension can be a dealbreaker. After all, you don’t want to ride on rocky terrain with a scooter that has no shock absorption at all!

The Segway Ninebot Max G2 is one of the best riding scooters due to its double built-in suspension.

However, since it is a built-in suspension, there isn’t much absorption on rough terrain, even though both wheels have suspension.

But those of you looking for something that can handle rougher terrain will want to choose the Xiaomi Scooter 4 Ultra instead!

Pneumatic Tires

Do you know what else is important for shock absorption besides the suspension? The type of tires! Of course, the type of tire matters less for shock absorption than the suspension, but it still makes a difference.

Additionally, pneumatic tires also provide better traction than standard solid tires, which is always welcome!

 

In this case, the clear Both the Ninebot Max G2 and Xiaomi 4 Ultra have really good pneumatic tires.

 

Both scooters have tubeless self-healing tires. The idea here is that the inside of the tire is covered with gel, and any object puncturing the tire won’t take the air out as the gell instantly fills the hole. The only difference is that the Ninebot Max G2 tires can handle 4mm objects, while Xiaomi 4 Ultra can handle less than 3.5mm objects without a puncture.

If your planned routes have angled slopes that you’ll need to climb, this is one of the most important specs for you! The climbing angle spec allows you to know just how steep of a slope the scooter can climb.

 

In this case, the Xiaomi Scooter 4 Ultra climbs to first place with its steeper angle of 25º. That’s not too steep, admittedly, but it sure is steeper than the 22º angles supported by the Ninebot Max G2!

 

Though, let’s be fair here, both of these scooters have pretty decent climbing angles for their price range. Not particularly impressive, sure, but they’re a tad above average!

Rear Brake

The last notable difference we can see between both of these scooters is the availability of a rear brake. Having a rear brake is particularly useful for quickly braking whenever you ride across a slippery surface.

Additionally, they can absorb some of the rear motion that front brakes would usually absorb, increasing the lifespan of both brakes!

 

Sadly, though, the Xiaomi Scooter 4 Ultra doesn’t feature a rear brake of any kind. It of course features the standard front brakes, but rear brakes would be a very welcome addition for sure!

 

As such, we have to give the win to the Ninebot Max G2 here, as it’s thoughtful enough to come with a rear brake alongside its front brakes.

On top of that, it has double suspension making it very comfortable on bumpy city rides.

It's an excellent scooter with plenty of autonomy, although it doesn't give you the 55 km that the app says, but Xiaomi is synonymous with quality, the only problem is that it doesn't have shock absorbers and it feels very stiff at high speeds. The engine feels powerful and in sport mode it gives me 30 km/h without a problem, although it does consume more battery. It's perfect for tall people, as it's bigger than its previous versions.

Excellent purchase without a doubt! I live in Lisbon and I'm just a few minutes from work. Without a doubt it was the best purchase I made this year. I've had it since February and I don't regret it. The money I save on public transport, or even on public scooters, is not written. Portugal's roads are typically very parallel, and even without a shock absorber, thanks to the large wheels and their quality, I can walk through these terrain without any problem. The only “defect” is the weight, of course in my opinion. I live on the third floor, with a lot of stairs, without an elevator, and climbing with a 20 kg scooter is not easy sometimes. Other than that, it is quite easy to fold and portable. It has a lot of climbing strength and excellent brakes, you would feel the regenerative force very well as well. A tip that I give to those who are thinking of buying is to also buy a backpack that comes with its own grip for the scooter. It helps a lot for those with small hands, in addition to the backpack, which is great for carrying padlocks and even the tools and important things for the scooter, such as a portable compressor and pneumatic gel

The scooter itself is very good... but the packaging (box) was very badly treated, with dents everywhere, there were little pieces of cardboard missing in some parts, the bad thing was that I didn't take a picture of it, I focused more on testing the product. They sent it through an external package, I suppose because of the size of the box, and the people who brought it to my home didn't even try to put it in my house, they left it about a meter and a half from my door, I don't know why they did it that way and even if the box with the product is heavy as well as being a hindrance because of how big it is. But the product is good. At least these days that I've been using it, I've loved it, I don't give it 5 stars for the detail of the box and the packaging. If anything happens in later days I will be letting you know.

I bought this scooter to keep on our boat for running errands, small grocery runs and the like, since I don't have room for a bike. I'm a big guy ( close to 300 lbs ) and was concerned about a smaller, lighter scooter not being able to handle the abuse of me riding it, particularly if I had cargo in a backpack. This scooter is rated for 220 lbs, but seems totally able to handle far more. Unlike a lot of scooters, this one folds at the base of the steering, rather than a latch in the middle of the frame. The frame is one welded piece of aluminum and the wheels are 10" air filled. There's no suspension, which means it doesn't bottom out, but also means the only shock absorption is the tires. This scooter is big ( doesn't fit in the back of cars well ) because of the large deck and large diameter tires, but if you've got a good spot to park it, that's not an issue. A lot of electric scooters are children's toys, this is not one of them. It's a serious piece of last mile transportation, well built and capable. It's heavy ( a bit over 40 lbs ) because it's solidly built, has a massive battery pack for a scooter and the charger is built in. If you don't have to carry it far, that's not much of an issue either. You don't really feel the weight when moving and all that energy gives great range. The built in charger means there's no power brick to lose and all you need to carry with you is a cord if you want to charge it when not at home. The cord is a fairly standard appliance cord, so getting a replacement or a second one would be easy and inexpensive. There's an LED tail light ( it flashes when you hit the brakes ) and a nice, bright LED headlight with fairly good coverage, though I wish it was aimed just a bit higher for a longer throw. It's easy to overdrive it if you're moving fast. The brakes are a combination of a lever activated drum brake on the front wheel and regenerative braking on the rear wheel. I've got my lever adjusted to where I can run pull it only a little to trigger only the rear brake ( nice for long downhill ) or pull it more to grab the front if I really want to stop. The LED dash shows battery status in 10% increments ( 5 LED's, and the largest value one flashes to show it's half used ) plus bluetooth status, power mode ( eco, standard and sport ) MPH and if the headlight is on. There's also a phone app that allows you to update the scooter, make a few setting changes ( a sort of "cruise control" and regen level ) and lock/unlock the rear wheel for a little security when unattended. The Android app at least is a little unpolished with some translation issues. I sometimes see notifications in what I assume is Chinese and have no idea what it's trying to tell me and have seen Chinese instead of English in a few other spots as well. Range is great. As noted, I'm a big guy and I often carry a backpack with groceries and the scooter has far more range than I've ever needed. Product specs are about 40 miles ( with a light rider and a slow speed ) and I mostly ride on sport mode and full throttle a lot to accelerate. Still, I'll go 12 miles and it will tell me the battery is a 50%. It's got all the range that anyone commuting on a kick scooter could need and then some. Power is good. Steep hills slow it down some, but so far it's climbed everything I've used it on. Obviously, a lighter person would climb better. Speed is adequate. There are two versions of the max, the G30 ( 18.9 MPH ) and the G30P ( 15.5 MPH ). I somehow ended up with the P version, but frankly, 15.5 MPH is fast enough for me. 10" still isn't a terribly large tire and you've really got to watch for road hazards. So, in summary, most of it's downsides are consequences of it's upsides. Yes, it's big, heavy and expensive. But that size and weight give it good power, good speed, good range, big tires and a great build quality. Despite buying it from Segway through Amazon, the purchasing experience was less than perfect. My scooter was the slower model, despite the fact that it was advertised as the faster one. It arrived damaged ( some dings and scratches ) and appeared that it might have been opened before, since it was missing the screws to fasten the handlebars on and the allen wrench to do this. I complained to Segway and got a small discount, but they never sent the screws and tools as they had promised and I had to source my own screws to use the scooter.

I have been using the scooter for 4 months, daily from Monday to Friday, daily trips of approximately 16-18 km and I can say that it is the best investment I have ever made. One charge gives me for two days of trips, using it at the Max speed of 30km/h. The climbs are covered without major problem, at most it lowers the speed to 25. I have used it on days with little rain and I have had no problem (the only detail is to make sure that the entrance to the charger is closed properly, because then it opens) Highly recommended!

I bought this scooter to save myself from an hour plus bus commute every day, and I hated showing up to work sweaty after a bike commute in the sun. I've been riding it for about 2 months now and it's be fantastic! I'm able to ride it back and forth (40 mins each way) twice in one charge and I'm usually travelling between 18-25kph throughout. I'm always coming into work with a smile on my face because it's so fun to ride and doesn't feel like an actual commute. I'm 5ft 9in and the handlebar height is comfortable for me. Riding with your knees bent, weight back, and anticipating any bumps in the road is a must. You cannot ride on an uneven or cracked sidewalk without feeling every single bump right into your arms, but the bike lane or multi use sidewalks are a breeze. If you have good balance or are relatively athletic then it's intuitive to ride on and steer. If you're going as fast as you can and putting all your weight in your arms, then you'll go flying off the second you hit a curb. Use your brain and practice before you start riding around pedestrians and cars. When in Drive mode the accelerator is a bit of a hair trigger, so start slow until you're comfortable driving this thing around. Negative reviews about the speed either have dead batteries or they haven't taken it out of eco-mode - it goes plenty fast and is very nimble considering the weight of the unit. Overall I don't consider those to be actual detriments to the scooter as the benefits far outweigh those 'cons'. So far it's been reliable, safe, and a lot of fun. I highly recommend it! (You do have to download an annoying Segway app to begin with, but you don't need to to use it when you're actually riding the scooter. I haven't opened it since I initially configured the scooter and have had no trouble. You can track your rides if you want but you dont have to.)
